Conveniently located off Interstate 85 about 20 miles northeast of Uptown Charlotte, Concord got its name from the lively discussion its founders had when deciding where to place the county seat. When they reached a compromise, they named the town Concord, meaning “harmony,” to reflect the peaceful spirit in which the issue was settled.
Today, Concord is recognized for its concentration of motorsports attractions, which include Charlotte Motor Speedway, the Hendrick Motorsports Museum and various NASCAR driver headquarters. Concord also is home to the state’s most popular tourist attraction – the 1.4 million-square foot Concord Mills outlet shopping mall.
Located within a two-block radius, Historic Downtown Concord offers theaters, art galleries, a library, specialty retailers, a pottery studio, a botanical garden and a pedestrian greenway system. Homes in the area vary from Tudor-style mansions to transitional homes to bungalows in the historic district.
One of the fastest growing counties in the region, Cabarrus County also is an emerging leader in the biotechnology and food sciences industries with the North Carolina Research Campus, a public-private venture supporting a community of 300 scientists and support staff focused on research.
